Local Lollipop men and women saved

Following yesterday's meeting with local councillors to try and stop plans to axe local lollipop services there has been a positive outcome.49 patrols at Primary schools in the Southampton area would have been axed prior to the meeting. The U-turn came after only 10% of the schools affected agreed to pay for the services themselves. The plan was part of many cuts to try and make up a £736,000 deficit with services offered to schools by the council. The lollipop services cost around £208,000 a year to run, with the average lollipop man or woman earning about £5,000 a year.Since the plan was announced it was highly criticised by many including parents, local MP's, schools and road safety campaigners. Education boss Dan Jeffery, confirmed during yesterday's meeting that the council will continue to fund the services. Cllr Jeffery sad: "We have understood what has come out of this process and we are clear this was a genuine exercise to see where we could share costs. We will continue to fund the school crossing patrols."I would like to thank the schools who were prepared to step up but we have listened and reflected and we will be withdrawing that proposal."
