features a young prince who falls in love with a male swan.

The male swan represents the freedom that the young prince craves, away from the constant royal duties he attends with his unmaternal mother, the Queen, elegantly yet coldly performed by the beautiful Nicole Kabera.

In the opening scene of the ballet, the prince, emotionally played by James Lovell, dreams of the swan and he encounters the same swan late at night after leaving a seedy nightclub gliding on a lake at a public park.

This vision saves the prince’s life as he was on the verge of committing suicide by throwing himself into the water.

Fourteen other male swans appear and dance with great power and intensity.

Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake - Photo by Johan Persson

Bourne really highlights swan like characterisation in his choreography - an arm bent at the elbow over the dancers’ heads, arms stretched behind them to represent wings, to name a couple.

We also get a sense of how aggressive these creatures can be by the stamping of feet and hissing.

A stand out moment for me was the letter ‘V’ formation that the male dancers create on the stage immediately reminding me of swans in flight.

The set representing the park is incredibly beautiful.

I noticed that the sets throughout, designed by Lez Brotherston, who also designed the gorgeous costumes, are fairly scarce, with one or maybe two large objects depicting the scene.

The prince’s bedroom is dominated by a huge double bed and headboard, the palace has two huge torches hanging from the back wall and a few small round tables and the park is represented by a black lake with white ripples on the water.

There is a full moon and white branches meet above the stage, perhaps representing the meeting of the prince and the swan.

Flushed with love, the prince rips up the suicide note and leaves the lake jubilant and Act 2 ends on a happy note.

Events turn dark, though in Acts 3 and 4.

Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake - Photo by Johan Persson

A stranger dressed in black leather trousers and long black coat, appears to gate crash a dance at the palace.

He creates a stir as the women are drawn to his masculinity and he flirts and dances with them all, infuriating their male partners.

Believing that the Stranger is his beloved white swan the prince is furious when he dances lewdly with the Queen.

The two men dance an Argentine tango but the Stranger tells the Prince he doesn’t recognise him.

Rebuffed by the stranger, the prince’s mental health deteriorates and his mother and Private Secretary admit him to an asylum.

The final Act is heartbreaking.

The prince dreams of the swans crawling from under the bed and entering from different sides of his room. The ensemble’s agility is extraordinary as they jump with precision onto the bed.

The moment when they leave and the prince’s swan appears is almost reminiscent of a moment in a well known horror film, but I won’t give away any clues and will leave that for you to see!

The swans appear again but they attack the prince and then dismember the Swan.

Even though this is done by mime and no blood is evident, apart from some scratches when the swan first appears, it is disturbing to watch the dancers opening their mouths wide, almost vampire-esque as they bite the swan and turn towards the audience, mouths still open and chests puffed out.

Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake - Photo by Johan Persson

It is a brilliant production and one I will never forget and there are so many fabulous moments throughout.

The ballet, watched by the Queen, Private Secretary, the prince and his Unsuitable Girlfriend, played brilliantly with real sass and loveability by Bryony Wood is full of comedy as we watch her constantly annoying the Queen with her inappropriate behaviour - I panicked when a mobile phone rang and realised it was the girlfriend’s and meant to happen!.

The bird theme also filters through during the scene at The SWANK nightclub where the dancers are dressed in 1960’s outfit and the ladies don short Mary Quant hairstyles, but some of the dance moves reminded me of bird characteristics, particularly their heads moving backwards and forwards and their hands bent to look like the head of a bird.

The themes of love, jealousy, death, anger and mental illness are all prevalent but there are also sprinkles of humour scattered throughout. The audience gave a well deserved standing ovation and clapped, cheered and whistled for ages showing the New Adventures Company their absolute admiration for these talented young dancers.

Book your seats here

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/review-peter-james-picture-you-dead-mayflower-theatre/

Never has “fake it until you make it” been such a deadly phrase and in “Picture You Dead” the art of crime writing is a masterpiece.

Touted as the most successful modern-day crime stage franchise since Agatha Christie, Peter James has sold millions for books worldwide with Superintendent Roy Grace as his perennial detective hero.

And you can tell James is a compelling writer, even his programme notes are a cracking read!

Adapted for stage from the bestselling Picture You Dead this is whodunnit, that turns into howtheydunnit and ends… well, that would spoil it for you…

However, what you can expect is some great acting, fast paced scene changes and a complex world of art and forgery explained through fine strokes on a great canvas.

The stage is cleverly split between three main settings, a suburban front room, a stately home study and an artist’s studio.

And with slick production, we shift scenes as quickly as cuts on a TV screen, with the actors holding your attention throughout, and the sound design adding a very subtle yet persuasive underscore.

If you are an avid soap fan there are plenty of well known names on stage, Fiona Wade, recognised for her role as Priya Sharma in ITV’s Emmerdale, is Freya Kipling the wife of Harry - played by Ben Cutler (Warren in Eastenders).

Freya Kipling & Ben Cutler

Very convincing as a couple, they kiss as brilliantly as a loving couple would, and by the interval you’re really hoping that nothing sinister could befall them. I’ve never been on the Orient Express, but I have travelled by train in a few places, including Kazakhstan and Russia, where I’ve seen those stunning, panelled wooden doors. It made me feel as though we really were aboard a grand sleeper train.

The staging was classy, clever, and seamless. The way the production moved us through the train’s carriages was masterful, reinforcing the illusion of constant motion.

The set’s fluid transformations somehow deepened the mystery and intrigue of the plot, enhancing the sense of both confinement and suspense. The way space was used was particularly striking.

Some of the action unfolded within the train’s narrow passageways, heightening the claustrophobia and tension, while other moments expanded beyond the carriage, giving room for the emotions and stories of each character to unfold.

The playwright doesn’t always get the recognition they deserve, but Ken Ludwig’s knack for blending wit with suspense, paired with Lucy Bailey’s dynamic direction, lifts the comedy and tragedy straight off the page.

The audience is taken on an emotional journey, shifting effortlessly between laughter and tension. I enjoyed the name dropping and references in the dialogue for the detective-loving audience members.

Some of the lines were so sharp and quick-witted that they were almost too easy to miss, and with the rich variety of accents on stage, this might just be a play that demands a second viewing to catch every subtle reference and cleverly crafted remark.

As a sewer, I’m always drawn to costumes, and what amazed me on the drive home was that they were so beautifully designed, crafted, and worn that they didn’t stand out at all. That said, the fabulous coats worn by Debbie and Simon might just be worth smuggling out of the wardrobe department. What do they want the audience to feel? To take away with them? What message are they trying to convey?

I have watched many different versions of this fairy tale including the Disney film released in 1950, the 1976 musical, ‘The Slipper and The Rose’ starring Richard Chamberlain and Gemma Craven, the 2015 film directed by Kenneth Branagh featuring Lily James as Ella and Richard Madden as The Prince as well as pantomimes but I have never watched the ballet.

This production of Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet showcases exquisite choreography by Sir David Bintley.

The musical score is full of romance, but is also melancholic at times and really brings to life the different emotions and personalities in the story.
What struck me whilst I was watching the drama unfold was the sets are very stripped back.

Apart from the cellar featuring a large grey stone fireplace and massive wooden cupboard, the magic of the story comes to life through the dancing with hints of where the action is set.

For example, a huge rectangular mirror is the only piece of furniture on stage when Cinderella is being dressed by the adorable lizards, frog and mice.

The stage is then dominated by the crystal carriage made of entwined branches and leaves set against the dark blue starlit sky. Instead of the ornate interior of a palace it is illustrated by a stone staircase flanked either side by two stone entrance pillars.

This gave a similar coldness and throwback to the cellar and I couldn’t help thinking that the palace ballroom could have been depicted instead by a beautiful chandelier and more warm surroundings to indicate a change in Cinderella’s fate.

A real stand out moment for me was when the clock approached midnight.

As it starts chiming it pulls apart to reveal its inner workings, giving a really powerful hint that the magic is soon to come to an end and Cinderella will once again be plunged back into her life of servitude to her stepmother and petulant stepsisters.

There are many references to nature throughout. When the fairy spirit of Cinderella’s mother arrives, mist engulfs the stage and the three sections making up the cellar reveal an evening sky dazzling with stars.

The four seasons are also represented by ballerinas wearing green, gold, burgundy or silver and the corps de ballet look beautiful dressed in white tutus decorated in silver stars and adorning silver tiaras.

They dance as the pumpkin turns into the carriage and again with the Prince and Cinderella - perhaps hinting that our lives are written in the stars.

The costumes designed by John Macfarlane, who also designed the sets, are sumptuous and theatrical and give a real 18th century feel but also hint towards Vivienne Westwood’s style.

The dressers look elegant in their tail coats and wigs and the hugely talented Tzu-Chao Chou as the dancing master makes a huge impact dressed in red velvet.

The ugly step sisters were dressed in short dresses - one in yellow and the other in black with Madonna cone basque complete with black and white tights.

I am always amazed how a story can be told through dance and gestures alone. The characterisation throughout was impeccable by all the company.

Particular mention must go to the two step sisters for bringing so much humour to the stage with their constant quarreling and fighting as well as flirting with one of the dressers and footmen and their love of food!

I also adored the depiction of the dancers who played the frog, lizards and the mice. They were a delight to watch and they were so convincing you could almost believe they were real!

There is a jaw dropping moment when Mathias Dingman who plays the Prince so incredibly lifts Miki Mizutani holding her calf and waist. It’s almost a Patrick Swayze moment but I should imagine even more technically difficult!

All in all, a truly enjoyable evening and I drifted away watching the sheer beauty of these dancers on stage.

The audience whistled and cheered at the end of each act as well as at the end and also showed their huge appreciation to the fabulous Royal Ballet Sinfonia under the direction of Paul Murphy.

Book your seats here Mayflower Theatre

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/review-dear-evan-hansen-mayflower-theatre/
Review - Dear Evan Hansen - Mayflower Theatre
2025-01-23T08:57:33+00:00
Brand new production of the multi-award-winning show. It's a show that doesn't just entertain, it matters.

The touring production of Dear Evan Hansen is a triumphant return for one of modern musical theatre’s most beloved shows. Since the West End production closed in October 2022, anticipation among fans—affectionately dubbed "Fansens"—has been palpable. As someone deeply connected to this story, I approached the show with a mix of excitement and trepidation. Would the new production do justice to this multi-award-winning masterpiece by Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul? Thankfully, the answer is a resounding yes.

At its heart, Dear Evan Hansen is a poignant exploration of connection, belonging, and the desperate lengths people will go to feel understood. It tells the story of Evan, a socially anxious teen whose life is upended by a tragic event and a misunderstanding that spirals into a life-changing lie. The musical’s emotional weight is underscored by themes of mental health, family, friendship, and loss, brought to life by a stirring, Grammy-winning score that has earned its place in musical theatre history.

This production is an absolute roller coaster of emotions, delivering laughter and tears equally. Standout performances make this revival truly shine. Ryan Kopel as Evan is a revelation, combining flawless vocals with impeccable comic timing to portray the awkwardness, yearning, and heartbreak of a character beloved by so many. Tom Dickerson, as Jared delivers much of the show’s humour, his energy and comedic instincts ensuring that the audience is in stitches. Meanwhile, Will Forgrave delivers a standout performance, arguably the best Connor I've seen, bringing depth and complexity to a character often overshadowed by his role in the plot’s catalyst. The trio’s chemistry is especially evident in “Sincerely, Me,” a number that cleverly balances humour and heart while always bringing the house down.

The supporting cast also deserves high praise. Alice Fearn’s portrayal of Heidi Hansen is raw and relatable, with her rendition of “So Big, So Small” offering a heart-wrenching insight into a mother’s unconditional love and struggles. Similarly, Richard Hurst as Larry Murphy brings a quiet strength to “Break In A Glove,” a scene that underscores the generational differences in coping with loss. The layered performances of the parents provide a crucial counterbalance to the younger characters’ journeys, enriching the emotional tapestry of the story.

One of the most significant updates in this touring production is the enhanced staging. Visually stunning, the new design heightens the mood and immerses the audience in Evan’s world. The addition of an ensemble and expanded vocal arrangements adds depth to the musical numbers. And, of course, no production of Dear Evan Hansen would be complete without its iconic numbers. From the soul-stirring “You Will Be Found” (bring tissues!) to the intimate, heartfelt moments that pepper the show, the music remains as powerful as ever.

What makes Dear Evan Hansen truly special is its relevance. The show tackles the pervasive influence of social media and its potential to amplify both connection and isolation. It captures the zeitgeist of our digital age while grounding its narrative in deeply human struggles. The result is a musical that doesn’t just entertain—it matters.

This touring production is a must-see for Fansens and newcomers alike. However, that's not to say this relatable journey wasn't shown without fun and laughter.

"Now That's What I Call A Musical" immediately immersed us in bright sing-along throwbacks, accompanied by neon lighting to reflect the trends at the time, and the rose-tinted optimistic outlook shared by young people across generations.

The journey and flashbacks of main characters Gemma and April were expertly relayed with euphemisms that had the audience giggling; hits that had us clapping and singing; and a predictable plot that allowed us to soak up the relics that featured such as the VHS store and tapes.

Last night's performance also featured a glittering and dazzling showcase from 80's popstar Sonia, which added to the list of cleverly curated cyclical plot points.

Now That's What I Call A Musical - Sonia

With a diverse range of dynamic performances including a seductive rendition of Tainted Love, an electric performance of Video Killed the Radio Star and a slightly hard (but not too hard) hitting version of Heart of Glass, this was a classic feel-good show with an enjoyable but not cheesy entertainment factor.

Get you tickets from Mayflower Theatre

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/review-hairspray-at-the-mayflower-theatre/

Hairspray Photo by Ellie Kurttz

From the moment the music begins and multicoloured lights cast their beams across the audience at The Mayflower Theatre you feel like you are at the biggest party in town.

The curtain rises and we are transported to Baltimore and introduced to Tracy Turnblad, a bubbly, 16 year old, donning a bouffant hairstyle, whose dream is to appear as a dancer on, ‘The Corny Collins Show’.

When John Waters wrote, ‘Hairspray,’ he based the Corny Collins show on a popular teenage television programme, ‘The Buddy Deane Show,’ which was broadcast from Baltimore.

This dance show aired from 1957 to 1964 six days a week and mainly featured white teenagers, apart from every other Friday when black teenagers were allowed to be the stars.

Before I saw the musical I had no idea what the storyline was and assumed it was set in a hair salon. In fact, the main theme surrounds black and white segregation.

Hairspray Photo by Ellie Kurttz

This prejudice is highlighted mainly through Velma Von Tussle’s character, played in true villainesque style with what struck me as similarities to Cruella De Vil, by the beautiful Joanne Clifton. Von Tussle is the producer of the, ‘Corny Collins Show,’ and it is a direct, ‘no,’ when Tracy attends an audition and a stronger, ‘no,’ to Little Inez, a black teenager.

Joanne Clifton is obviously an incredibly talented dancer but I didn’t realise how amazing her singing voice is and she has definitely earned her place as a West End Star.

Katie Brace is the perfect Tracy Turnblad, combining a gentle character with a strong passion for change, in particular, racial segregation.

The energy required for this role is immense as Tracy has a vivacious, expressive personality.

She also sings and dances a great deal throughout. One of my favourite moments was the song, ‘I Can Hear The Bells,’ when she is dreaming about Link Larkin, her crush and singer and dancer on, ‘The Corny Collins Show’.

Solomon Davy was perfect as Link Larkin. He has model looks, the Elvis moves plus a warm heart.

I was in awe of the characterisation depicted by Stuart Hickey who showed his versatile talent by playing several roles, including the principal of Tracy’s high school and Mr Pinky, the owner of a store for plus size women. Kirsty Sparks also created unappealing characters - the abusive, religious mother of Penny Pingleton, Tracy’s best friend, the lusty, lesbian, PE Captain and a prison warden of Big Doll House. You could be mistaken for thinking that she is the Wicked Witch of the West in, ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ due to her bent stature and sly facial expressions, but without the green skin tone!

Hairspray Photo by Ellie Kurttz

The two highlights of the show for me were firstly the number, ‘Timeless,’ performed by Tracy’s parents, Edna (Neil Hurst) and Wilbur (Dermot Canavan).

The casting of these two characters couldn’t have been more perfect and the chemistry between them was palpable and so loveable. There were a few moments when they dropped character as they were laughing at certain points during the routine but it was a joy to watch and they had the biggest cheer of the entire show.

Michelle Ndegwa as MotorMouth Maybelle gave a phenomenal performance. She has an amazing stage presence and her rendition of, ‘ I Know Where I’ve Been,’ was full of strength and emotion. T

he image of Martin Luther King surrounded by names of black people who have fought for change was incredibly moving and poignant.

Other members of the cast who deserve a huge mention are Allana Taylor, as Amber Von Tussle, who portrayed the spoilt teenager to a tee whilst looking absolutely beautiful, Freya McMahon as Penny Pingleton, who shed her geeky teenage self and blossomed into a glamorous dancer in love with her boyfriend Seaweed, played by the gifted Reece Richards, who defined cool!

Grace Anyiam, Vanessa Dumatey and Sasha Monique who played, ‘The Dynamites’ were sensational and elegant and have sublime singing voices.

The audience gave a huge cheer and round of applause at the end of Act One and they showed their appreciation at the end of the show by giving the cast and band a well deserved standing ovation. His comic timing and facial expressions are brilliant and he is incredibly quick witted and spontaneous. There are so many funny moments it is hard to pick some out but the scene with Mrs Blunderbore (Anne Smith), Ashley Banjo as Jack Trot and Perri Kiely was outstanding.

What starts out as a fairly simple tongue twister about, “poisonous pythons hissing in a pit,” develops into a complex narrative with Silly Simon crossing the stage relaying questions and answers from Jack and Mrs Blunderbore.

It brought the house down and incredibly there was only one slip up from Perri.

There were peals of laughter when Silly Simon also wants to join Diversity and says he has been practising all year. Donning a bright green leotard and shocking pink tights he launches into various hilarious dancesto well known songs.

One of the funniest was watching Orkian dance to, ”The Birdy Song,” and then Ashley Banjo and Perri making it look like the coolest song ever to dance to giving it the full Diversity treatment complete with spins and somersaults!

Matt Rixon was loveable and saucy as Dame Trot, mother to Jack and Silly Simon. Looking colourful in huge dresses, flamboyant wigs and over the top makeup he wastes no time in making Aaron in the front row the object of his affections. For me Matt Rixon was more of a traditional dame and I really loved this flashback to my youth.

There was a real rapport with the audience and the scene with Silly Simon where she is asking him questions and Simon’s replies are song lyrics, including, “Who Let the Dogs Out,” Let It Go,” and, “Never Enough” were very funny.

Anne Smith looked beautiful as Mrs Blunderbore and was a wonderful villain. She has a rich voice with beautiful diction and showed how incredibly talented she is during the sketch about the poisonous pythons. It really was a tour de force!

Lauren Hampton was radiant as Princess Jill and Jacqueline Hughes was perfect as The Spirit of the Beans and are both blessed with wonderful singing voices.

I must mention the talented ensemble who added so much radiance to the stage. I wasn’t too sure about the cow printed shorts and tied shirts worn by the male dancers but all of the dancers looked as if they were having a ball on the stage!

Cow Pat was totally adorable and a highlight was when one of her shoes came off and was put back lovingly by Silly Simon!

Ashley Banjo, Perri and the dancers from Diversity were outstanding as always. Last year I really wanted to see more dancing from them and this year there certainly is. They are quite simply jaw droppingly brilliant to watch.

The technical team did a brilliant job at creating stunning lighting effects and sprinkling some surprises throughout the show - most memorable were the beanstalk and the huge animatronic to represent the giant which lurched towards the audience.

I can only think that the Mayflower Theatre must have used magic beans to create this spectacular show. What does it matter if the story doesn't make sense? They're five! The sad irony is, this seems to have been the attitude of the creators of this touring production.

Corners were cut - and never the right ones - leaving us with a show that felt like a cash grab, targeting families with young children who will of course have wanted to see the live version of their favourite Christmas film. The quality of this show was, at times, shameful. And at £30 a ticket? God bless the parents who sat through tonight's show. Their children enjoyed it of course. They're five!

There were several very watchable performances, and excellent vocals from Jovie, Emily, and Michael, but sadly our lead's vocals were not strong enough to compete with the deafeningly loud pre-recorded music. The music was an issue throughout - why was there a dance sequence which had a pre-recorded tap dancing effect blasting through the speakers? Several singing queues were missed and our lead fell behind on several occasions.

It was peppered with oddities: Why was the LED screen (which much was made of in the production's advertising) low quality and showing (often irrelevant to the scene) short gif-like movies that looked as though they were pulled from WhatsApp? Why was one of the office workers wearing a Mickey Mouse Christmas jumper? Who was the man in the tracksuit who forced everyone into a pantomime "he's behind you"? Did they really think that by having Buddy the Elf run through the audience for 5 minutes we wouldn't ever turn our heads to see the other cast having to unceremoniously hoick the scenery around?

This show would have been a triumph were it local community theatre in a village hall, but at this level and this cost, it was unacceptably messy. And it's sad because Elf the Musical has a wonderful soundtrack, and has the potential to be a fantastic winter show if attention is placed in the right areas. But why bother, eh? When the audience will surely be filled every night.

Verity Babbs is the host of Voice FM's 'Arts & Culture Show' on Wednesdays at 2PM
www.veritybabbs.com
Instagram

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/enbs-the-nutcracker-at-mayflower-theatre/

After battling with crowds of bargain hunters at the Black Friday sales, settling down to watch English National Ballet's world premiere of, 'The Nutcracker' was the perfect antidote.

This sumptuous production has been choreographed by the Artistic Director of English National Ballet, Aaron S Watkin, and Arielle Smith and is truly a box of delights.

I am currently directing a play with ten cast members and was in awe at the huge feat of choreographing a company of dancers at a busy Christmas market, or the hustle and bustle of guests enjoying the Stahlbaums' Christmas Eve party, as well as the tranquil scene representing a snow globe when Clara and the Prince meet the Ice Queen and lastly the mesmerising dancing of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her buttercream roses is extraordinary.

The ballet is loosely based on the original story by E.T.A. Hoffman and composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

We are introduced to the sweet shop owner, Drosselmeyer, right at the beginning of the ballet. He is also a toymaker and whilst finishing off some toys with the help of his ghostly looking elvish assistants he decides to use his magic skills to turn a toy Prince into a nutcracker.

In the evening he attends the Christmas Eve party hosted by the Stahlbaums and gives out toys to the children. Clara Stahlbaum had admired the toy nutcracker earlier in the day when she went into the shop with her mother and is delighted when she opens her present.

When the guests have gone to bed Clara sneaks downstairs to find her Nutcracker and falls asleep on the sofa by the majestic Christmas tree.

Drosselmeyer appears casting spells to distort space and time and Clara wakes at midnight. From here a fantastical journey begins.

Clara has grown up and is suddenly not in the comfort of the drawing room but in the middle of a battle between a human sized Nutcracker and Rat King, symbolising the evil looking cheese shop owner, Uromys Grimeswer. The Nutcracker is wounded by Grimeswer's sword and Clara then kills the evil rodent.

The set changes throughout are slick and instead of being at a castle Clara and her Prince find themselves in an icy wonderland, with icicles adorning the scene and snow gently falling.

You could really feel the chill in the air!

Adorned with a tall silver crown the beautiful Ice Queen, Isolde, dances with her icicles and snowflakes swirling beautifully round the stage. This scene literally took my breath away, and a wow moment was when an ice seahorse flies through the air with the two lovers nestled in a silver carriage.

Next stop, the Land of Sweets and Delights and this scene did indeed delight.

Some of the guests at the Christmas Eve Party become dancing sweets and the Sugar Plum Fairy and Prince Coqueluche represent Clara's mother and father.

Six medieval style tents are placed around the stage each with a topper to identify them, for example, the liquorice tent has liquorice allsorts, the Tanghulu tent red fruits on a stick.

The sweets perform their own dance. The audience were delighted by the bubbly group of young children dressed as liqourice allsorts hurrying through their tent, smiling from ear to ear and joined in their dancing by Bertie Bassett.

I also loved the graceful, elegant dance of the dancers representing the Middle Eastern hot drink, Sahlab. Assisted out of a silver tea cup a female dancer in cream with large blonde curls represents whisked milk and she is twirled round and lifted by two male dancers in brown full length leotards with head pieces made to look like cinnamon sticks.

I felt tears run down my face twice. Firstly, during the Waltz of the Snowflakes when choristers from The Pilgrims' School Chamber Choir sang the melody. I think a treble voice is the most pure and beautiful sound and always makes me emotional.

Then, I welled up again when the Sugar Plum Fairy dances the Pas de Deux in Act II with her Prince. It must have been the mix of the stunning music the endearing and tangible bond between these two principal dancers and their grace.

Dick Bird, the Set and Costume Designer is simply a genius. I loved the similarities between Drosselmeyer and Willy Wonka.

Junor Souza clearly revelled in playing the flamboyant sweet shop owner and toy maker.

Dressed in red waistcoat, pin striped trousers, black top hat he looks the typical Edwardian gentleman and the red tail coat adds a stunning swirling effect.

Uromys Grimsewer the menacing cheese shop owner could be mistaken for Fagin, again in top hat and tails but grey and flanked by his pickpockets who become street mice and rats.

Two of my favourite costumes were the buttercream roses - the skirts were made of white and pink ombre petals and a single large rosebud, and the Sugar Plum Fairy's lilac and gold tutu was just exquisite

I must mention the special effects and lighting.

Using projected images to create colourful, moving bands of colour, as if they had appeared from a wand, when Drosselmeyer performs his magic was stunning and the shadows of rats scurrying across the top of the door frame and the image of a rat becoming the life size Rat King was incredible.

The English National Balket Philharmonic under the direction of Maria Seletskaja, produced a phenomenal sound. Listen out for the flutes during The Waltz of the Snowflakes creating an icy sound.

I wished it wouldn't come to an end but have decided that I will endeavour to make it a tradition to see, 'The Nutcracker' every year.

Don't miss this spellbinding production, I can guarantee that if you weren't feeling the Christmas Spirit quite yet this magical ballet will make that possible.

To see this production on tour visit https://www.ballet.org.uk/

For more shows at the Mayflower visit https://www.mayflower.org.uk/whats-on/

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/review-chicago-at-the-mayflower-theatre/

CHICAGO. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but then realised that it was the first time I had seen the band on the stage.

This immediately makes you feel like you are actually at a cabaret club but it was also endearing to watch the fun interactions between the cast and the musicians who looked like they were having a ball.

Another variation, a small one perhaps, was that Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart are both brunettes.

In past productions one has been blonde and in the film that is also the case, but somehow this tweak made them appear more of a double act.

In this touring production Roxie Hart is played by Faye Brookes who is just incredible in this role.

Her facial expressions during, ‘We Both Reached for the Gun,’ were brilliant, in fact her spectrum of physical emotions is genius and her comedy timing throughout is impeccable.

Djalenga Scott was a striking Velma Kelly.

Due to her elegant stature and sleek bun she could be mistaken for a well spoken English young lady not the feisty murderess she really is.

Djalenga brings a beautiful grace to her dancing, making it look so easy anyone could get up there and do it, but when she shows Roxie the dance routines she used to perform with her sister we see the comedic Velma shine.

Brenda Edwards gave a strong and solid performance as Mama Morton, the prison warden and, “keeper of the keys”.

Her rendition of, ‘When You’re Good to Mama,’ was immensely powerful, and although she helps her female inmates in exchange for money I couldn’t help but think those ladies are in safe hands! Star of stage and screen, Darren Day, performed the role of the suave and smooth talking lawyer, Billy Flynn, with finesse.

His years of experience in the industry give him that real stage presence and assuredness.

One of my favourite numbers in the show is, ‘All I Care About’.

Billy stands singing surrounded by dancing girls holding feather fans.

At one point they circle round him so he looks like an oyster in a shell, or perhaps it can also represent Billy as the centre of their world at that time relying on him to get them acquitted.

The dancers are sensational and their synchronisation is extraordinary.

They demonstrate mesmerising agility and acrobatic skills particularly during, ‘Razzle Dazzle’, but also watch out for the stunts on the ladders either side of the stage, which Roxie and Velma also hang from.

Not only can the dancers dance brilliantly but they have fantastic singing voices as well.

‘Cell Block Tango’ is a stand out performance in the show, the female dancers bring attitude and girl power to the stage and recite their individual stories with intensity and humour.

There are so many fantastic moments I can’t mention them all, but I do want to mention Jordan Lee Davies who played the reporter, Mary Sunshine.

He looks beautiful and has an angelic soprano voice and gentle personality to match but wait for the surprise! Lastly, Joe Dale, a member of the ensemble, was hilarious portraying the different members of the jury.

There were two really lovely gestures in the production.

Firstly, Brenda Edwards introduced Neil MacDonald, the Musical Director, back to the stage for the start of Act Two, as, ‘Maestro!’ At the end of the show he announced the names of the cast as they came on to take their bows.

I have never seen this done before but it really did solidify the special relationship between the musicians and the cast.

The audience was made up of people of all ages and the cast certainly did, ‘razzle dazzle ‘em as they gave a well deserved standing ovation at the end.

It really is a show that leaves you wanting more but we were treated to a final rendition of, ‘All That Jazz’ by the band once the cast members had left the stage - it felt like the nugget at the end of a Marvel film and the cherry on the cake!

Don’t miss out on seeing this stunning show, running at The Mayflower Theatre until the 23rd of November.

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/wno-rigoletto-at-the-mayflower-theatre-review/
WNO Rigoletto at the Mayflower Theatre - Review
2024-11-14T23:31:03+00:00

When I spoke to Paul Carey Jones ahead of WNO’s Rigoletto coming to the Mayflower Theatre he told me that the opera opens with an orgy. And he wasn’t wrong. The opening was hypnotically repulsive, with people being un-ceremonially noshed off underneath huge – and beautiful – Georgian dresses. It was off-putting, yet impossible not to watch, almost liberating in its sheer gross-ness. It set me thinking – what is this show about?

It’s about Rigoletto, obviously. As far as plots go, Rigoletto is not a laugh-a-minute opera, but WNO’s cast managed to transform the really-quite-bleak story into a rich production with a lot of real humour and depth. The quality of the acting required to get any laughs out of an opera largely about death, submission, and kidnap cannot be under-praised.

Was it about repulsiveness? About giving in to impulse? I was excited for the interval only because it offered the first opportunity to talk about it.

In the end, I think that what this production centred on was folly. Yes, the opera is funadementally about the ridicule of the foolish and how it is foolish to believe that those who commit crimes against others will receive suitable retribution, but WNO had woven this theme of folly into the visual makeup of the show from the very beginning.

Before the opera began, I thought how beautiful the lightly gleaming sliver curtains were. They looked elegant and ethereal. Then, as they opened, I realised that they were actually a kind of grubby see-through plastic. The kind you find hung in thick strips in butchers shops to separate the areas where carcasses are hung from the public. Even the set was abbatoir-esque. No matter how beautiful the costumes were or the makeup, they were inevitably torn off and thrown to the floor and smudged. No matter how clean and orderly the set seems, with its white grids and minimalism, it will be stained with blood in the end. The curtain isn’t a silk cascade it’s a PVC wall. There was something wonderfully unsettling about the clash between the clinical purity of the set and the sense of grime that soaked everything from the curtain to the lustful, revenge-obsessed, and ego-driven characters. Status in the world did not protect these characters from injury, and immorality did not dictate who would be punished: it was all folly.

This production was outstanding, with breathtakingly beautiful moments in its lighting (and a fantastic lighting rig with footlights that highlighted the idea that all of these characters are ultimately taking part in a futile parade of vanity), incredible singers and actors, and a brilliantly assured visual identity. It’s only problems are the problems that all operas have: they’re a bit long because the characters say the same things over and over again. There’s nothing (reasonably) to be done about that. (My hope is that opera companies begin touring abridged versions of operas, like when you’re at church and they tell you you’re only singing verse one and four of a hymn, but I suspect this won’t ever happen).

What was most moving, though, was at bows when the cast emerged in their Protect Welsh National Opera t-shirts and holding their Equity banner. The Musicians Union representatives and members of cast greeted audience members in the queue on the way in to the Mayflower Theatre at the start of the night to tell us about the catastrophic cuts the WNO are facing, handing out leaflets with QR codes to sign their petition. The orchestra's decision to wear these t-shirts, too, served as an ever-present reminder that without funding, this sort of thought-provoking, music-that-hits-you-somewhere-deep-in-your-core, enlightening entertainment simply won’t exist anymore. And that threat is more real than ever.

People say that opera is inaccessible, and only enjoyed by an older, wealthier audience. How can opera companies address this if they have been forced into closure by government cuts? Tonight’s production was evidence – if any was needed – that world-class companies like WNO should be the pride of Britain, not seen as frivolity that we can turn our backs on when the purse-strings are tight. Far from irrelevant, opera companies like the WNO are vital for carrying on the lives of our most treasured stories, scores, and theatrical traditions.

Verity Babbs is the host of Voice FM's 'Arts & Culture Show' on Wednesdays at 2PM
www.veritybabbs.com
Instagram

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/and-juliet-mayflower-theatre/
& Juliet - Mayflower Theatre
2024-11-06T13:40:00+00:00
& Juliet roared into Southampton last night and boy was it something! I’d heard all about the show from its London residency and heard that it was phenomenal. So as I walked to the theatre I told my husband who was accompanying me “well, it’s guaranteed not to be terrible” – dampening our expectations given the incredible reviews, just in case. As we took our seats the vibe inside the Mayflower Theatre was lively and excited; everyone was excitedly awaiting something momentus.

War Horse was not only “not terrible”, it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. When the foal Joey came emerging from the dark, a low murmur of oohs and ahhs broke out like when a celebrity is a member of a cast and they first come on stage. The dark, by the way, was one of the most impactful theatrical assets of this production – with characters truly emerging and vanishing seamlessly without any of that slightly embarrassing on-stage trotting off to make it to the wings. The lighting design was incredible and demonstrated that Southampton wasn’t receiving a paired-back version of the London hit.

The acting was brilliant across the board, but Tom Sturgess – our lead – was particularly excellent. Usually, when watching a good actor, you don’t think “wow they’re doing some acting” – they’re so natural it doesn’t break the illusion. But Sturgess went beyond that. I reminded myself on a couple of occasions throughout the performance “God, he’s acting” - his character was so sympathetic and watchable that you became aware once again that this is a (masterful) act.

War Horse is excellent for all the reasons you’ll have heard about: the puppets are spellbinding (people audibly gasped when Sturgess first jumped to ride on Joey, and the first ploughing scene was genuinely one of the tensest things I have ever watched), and it is a genuinely touching depiction of World War One (especially in comparison to the Hollywood-ified movies which came out relentlessly during the centenary). But what moved me most about War Horse was that it was a love letter to pastoral England, led beautifully by Sally Swanson’s Singer. The early scenes of this play felt like nourishment for the soul, and by the time the curtain fell on Act 1 you were left thinking about who has come before you to make you who you are. War Horse isn’t just wonderful, it’s important.

Verity Babbs is the host of Voice FM's 'Arts & Culture Show' on Wednesdays at 2PM
www.veritybabbs.com
Instagram

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/northern-ballets-romeo-and-juliet-at-mayflower-theatre-review/
Northern Ballet's Romeo & Juliet at Mayflower Theatre - Review
2024-10-03T22:00:00+00:00

“I hope I can think of something to say”, I thought as I headed to the Mayflower Theatre. The problem with ballets is, they’re really good. The dancing is always amazing (otherwise the performers wouldn’t be in a major touring production by a large professional company), the costumes always have good money invested in them, and the soundtracks are always beautiful because they’re tried-and-tested classics. Once you’ve reviewed a couple of ballets – and unless you know so much about ballet that you can actually critique the minutiae of the dancing – it can be tricky to not feel like you’ve copied and pasted one review and just swapped out the names.

But, as soon as I passed the front of the theatre, I found the talking point of the evening: several members of the Musicians’ Union handing out flyers for their #KeepNorthernBalletLive petition. I spoke to Paul Burrows, the regional organiser for the MU for the South East, before I headed in to the theatre. He told me that their protest came in response to Northern Ballet’s use of recorded music for most of their performances, having cut their live orchestra due to chronic funding cuts from Arts Council England. The music track being used for Romeo and Juliet was performed by an orchestra in Eastern Europe, so it wasn’t even like a British orchestra got a day’s work out of it. The lack of live music at tonight’s performance was on everybody’s lips. After the curtain fell on Act One, our row discussed how much more impactful it would have been to have heard Prokofiev’s iconic Dance of the Knights (introduced to most of us as the theme tune to The Apprentice) with a live orchestra. We longed for those goosebump-inducing moments that only a live orchestra can provide, which is as much part of the ballet experience as the dancing. It also made it very tricky to know when to clap given that the musical recording didn't include pauses for applause. Just because an orchestra is out of sight, does not mean that it isn’t vital.

It would be unfair, however, to focus solely on this musical issue, because Northern Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet was wonderful. It definitely featured the best acting I’ve seen from a ballet cast – particularly from Dominique Larose as Juliet, Harris Beattie as Mercutio, and Jonathan Hanks as Capulet. This production did impeccably at getting across just how teenage Romeo and Juliet are: their love is intense and at times embarrassing in its intensity and naivety. Romeo’s friends are full of eye-roll-inducing teenage bravado. This childish charm makes the losses in the production all the more gut-wrenching. Mercutio staggering the stage, trying to keep up his swagger while maintaining that he was unharmed was almost excruciating to watch. Juliet’s nurse dressing the body for its entombment almost moved me to tears. Larose’s control of her body, both in her lacklustre duet with Paris in which she became a stroppy puppet and her duet with Romeo in her death-mimicking drugged state were spellbinding.

If I were to see this production again (and I would happily see this production again), I would request just one thing (okay, two things - bring back your orchestra): if an added-in bereaved mother in Act One and Tibalt in Act Two are allowed to give out a cry – let everyone. Or, ideally, let no one. The silent cries from our titular characters fell flat given that the only real scream came from a character never seen again right at the start of the performance. This small detail, for me, undermined part of this show's slickness.

Verity Babbs is the host of Voice FM's 'Arts & Culture Show' on Wednesdays at 2PM
www.veritybabbs.com
Instagram

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/disneys-aladdin-at-the-mayflower-theatre/
Disney's Aladdin at The Mayflower Theatre
2024-09-07T07:05:00+00:00
The cave of wonders has come to Southampton in Disney’s Aladdin at The Mayflower Theatre! Had it been less good I might have spent longer analysing each of the elements, the lighting, the set, the costume (which we were given a wonderful opportunity to see up-close in the foyer before the show began), but all of the elements melted into an indivisible, spectacular whole.

This is a big show, so big in fact, that it managed to make the Mayflower stage seem endearingly small – like we were being treated to some kind of exclusive, intimate performance. There were no concessions made in this touring production from the big West End or Broadway residencies, no corners were cut, and Southampton audiences were given full access to one of the world’s most iconic musicals.

Watching Laura Pick as Elphaba was at times bewilderingly good, leaving audiences stunned and looking to each other as if to say “are you hearing this?” during her crystal-clear belts. During her first solo of The Wizard and I, we were given the kind of goosebumps that part of you worries might be doing you permanent damage. The singing from all three of the main cast was so powerful it felt like it was reverberating in your bones.

One thing I did note was that because I was so used to the American accents on the Original Broadway recording, I was pleasantly struck by how the English-ness of this production brought out different elements of the characters. With an English accent, suddenly I could better imagine why Fiyero is so initially repugnant as a vapid posh boy, and not just a bit annoying as an American "jock".

Given the atrocities occurring today, Wicked feels perhaps more relevant that ever. It was wonderful to see the Mayflower filled to the brim several days after opening night, and to feel the overwhelming positive energy in the audience. This is the power of touring productions. Wicked at the Mayflower Theatre is a production that will restore your faith in humanity, just that little bit. Go.

Verity Babbs is the host of Voice FM's 'Arts & Culture Show' on Wednesdays at 2PM
www.veritybabbs.com
Instagram

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/life-of-pi-at-mayflower-theatre-review/
Life of Pi at Mayflower Theatre - Review
2024-05-15T09:00:00+00:00
If you are looking for a ravishingly beautiful show, Life of Pi is it. On stage, it can be easy for actors to fall into the trap of losing the authenticity of their character because so much focus is going into projecting their voice and delivering stage directions designed to be seen from the back. Arumugam was incredibly watchable precisely because of her lack of overacting, giving a performance in which every line felt like it could have been spoken by a 17 year old, not an actress trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

The set and lighting design of this production may well be the most accomplished I’ve seen on the Mayflower stage. The set transformed seamlessly with the help of the graceful ensemble, with several fold-out changes being almost gasp-worthily beautiful, particularly the moment when the cold lime-washed walls that had previously formed a Mexican hospital were opened up to become the rich botanical gardens of an Indian zoo.

Going in to Life of Pi, the one thing I was sure of was that the puppets would be good: the puppets were extraordinary. The artistry of the teams who operated the animals was incredible to watch, managing to bring the puppets to life to the degree that at one stage we could see each inhale and exhale of Richard Parker’s labored breath. The noises the operators made were also fantastically lifelike.

It was the lighting design from Tim Lutkin and Tim Deiling, though, that most won me over in this production. The vivid combinations of lights managed to get across a sense of heat, smell, and air quality in a way I’ve not seen before on any stage. The use of quirky on-stage lighting, and a beautiful moment where the lights projected out into the auditorium elevated this production and added to its charm.

Verity Babbs is the host of Voice FM's 'Arts & Culture Show' on Wednesdays at 2PM
www.veritybabbs.com
Instagram

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/chitty-chitty-bang-bang-mayflower-theatre-review/

The stage was set, everyone was waiting with excitement for the show to start, let me tell you it certainly did not disappoint. I’m very handy on a pub quiz if a round on musicals comes up. But Come From Away was entirely new to me: I didn’t listen to the soundtrack ahead of time and I knew very little about the production. I think going in to it blind helped me be totally swept up in this show’s charm. This is a beautiful show, practically glowing with joy and the palpable sense of camaraderie between the cast. I loved it.

It’s also worth noting that I’m someone who doesn’t remember 9/11, so I’m sure that this show would impact those who do in a way that I can’t necessarily appreciate. But the production seemed to handle its subject matter with real sensitivity.

The cast of this production were excellent. They were all equally watchable and swapped character seamlessly with the addition or removal of hats and jackets with blink-and-you’ll-miss-it precision. The choreography of this piece was wonderful, and managed to make group-movement a far cry from the GCSE drama skits that have flooded social media of late.

The production had the same spark I saw when I first watched Groundhog Day had, and the comparison goes beyond just the shared focus on a small close-knit community. Come From Away is genuine, funny, and the sense of cohesion and community within the cast radiates from the stage.

The staging within on the Mayflower Stage was also wonderful – it is a large stage to fill and this production managed to achieve a real sense of cosiness. By keeping the stage design simple, they made changes in lighting all the more impactful when beautiful moments of sunlight streamed from either side of the stage.

The mood in the audience was also joyous. At the first opportunity to clap, the audience cheered as if this were a seasoned classic, and not a new show fresh from the West End. The decision to stand for the final ovation was made instantly by everyone, without thought, it was simply the natural thing to do given the energy in the room. I even withstood my biggest usual Theatre Ick and clapped in time with the rest of the Mayflower when the fabulous musicians got their moment in the spotlight at bows.

Come From Away is superbly charming and perfect for anyone looking to spend an evening being reminded of the good in the world.

Verity Babbs is the host of Voice FM's 'Arts & Culture Show' on Wednesdays at 2PM
www.veritybabbs.com
Instagram

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/bonnie-and-clyde-at-the-mayflower-review/

The tale of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, notorious outlaws of the 1930s, has long fascinated audiences with its blend of romance, danger, and tragedy. In the theatrical adaptation of their story, "Bonnie &

Clyde" this fascination is brought to life with stirring melodies, dynamic performances, and a compelling narrative that delves into the complexities of love and loyalty amidst a backdrop of crime and chaos.

At the helm of the creative team are Grammy, Tony, Emmy, and Oscar winners, whose expertise shines through in every aspect of the production. From the mesmerizing performances to the captivating set design, their collective talent elevates "Bonnie & Clyde" to new heights of theatrical excellence.

From the moment the curtain rises, the audience is transported to the dusty roads of Depression-era America, where Bonnie & Clyde's fateful encounter ignites a fiery passion that drives them on a tumultuous journey of bank robberies, narrow escapes, and ultimately, their tragic demise.

The powerhouse performances of Katie Tonkinson as Bonnie and Alex James-Hatton (Heathers/Newsies) as Clyde anchor the production, their chemistry crackling with intensity as they navigate the highs and lows of their tumultuous relationship. Tonkinson captures Bonnie's longing for adventure and freedom, while James-Hatton exudes charisma and danger in equal measure. His voice is incredible, one I could listen to all day!

The supporting cast perfectly captures the feeling of the times this is set. Sam Ferriday and Catherine Tyldesley as Clydes brother Buck and his long-suffering wife Blanche bring some humility and a touch of comedy to the show, as well as one of the most moving scenes with Buck's demise.

Notable mention must go to Jaz Ellington who's gospel-tinged vocal style was perfect for his role as the Preacher. Several audience members around me were left a little bit speechless at some of his range! From the rousing anthem "This World Will Remember Us" to the haunting ballad "Dyin' Ain't So Bad," each song adds depth to the characters and propels the story forward with emotion and energy. While these songs fit perfectly within this show these are not your typical musical theatre numbers. They're much more than that.

The set pieces of this show are incredibly clever, using both video screens and props to set the scenes for a prison, Bonnie's childhood farm, and of course, the infamous Ford V8 car that is synonymous with the couple.

Much like 'Blood Brothers,' this show starts with the end of the story, and we witness the demise of Bonnie & Clyde as gunshots ring out throughout the theatre. This is not a show for those of a jumpy disposition!

In conclusion, "Bonnie & Clyde: The Musical" is a captivating theatrical experience that blends romance, drama, and suspense into a thrilling evening of entertainment. On the walk to the theatre I was wondering, what is the value of old opera? Is it their prestige tied to their age? In which case, shouldn’t we lean in to their historical value and give up on our need for everything to be made modern in the hope that it brings in new audiences (which it rarely ever does). But WNO’s choice to set Mozart’s Così fan tutte in a sixth form School of Love was a wonderful choice.

By moving the story into the school, WNO managed to perk up the thick misogynistic undertones of the plot, because who is more intense and changeable in love than teenagers? As someone who has been a teenage girl, I can attest that I would also have vowed to “bury myself alive” if my first boyfriend had been called away to the Navy. It’s like with Romeo and Juliet, their ages need to be emphasised because who else would behave this rashly for someone they’ve met for five minutes at a party? This interpretation made the young lovers charming and sympathetic.

Stylistically the set and costumes of this production were very pleasing (except for the interior murals of a pair of lockers in Act 2 which felt out of place). I liked the large cutout collages that shaped the stage, but it was a shame it was such a faff so see them moved onto the stage at the beginning. The opening scene, in which (seemingly hundreds of) school children ran across the stage moving the cutouts, was not as impactful as WNO may have hoped. These cast members were not very good at holding still in their freeze frames, and there were just so many of them that it weakened the visual. There were other occasions in which the broader cast were on stage without much reason, presumably to justify why there were so many of them, and at one stage a random schoolboy sat pensively in a spotlight for a few moments, only to walk right off. I think there were just too many people, and they often felt shoehorned into scenes to make use of them.

It was wonderful to listen to a live orchestra after having seen (and loved) Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands last week, which used a recorded soundtrack that got away with sounding live. Perhaps the sanctity of live music in opera is its value, and is what we should prioritise protecting above sticking to original time settings.

Despite my usual issue that operas are generally just too long, this production was a joy to watch. The main cast were wonderful actors in addition to their wonderful voices, and there were several laugh-out-loud moments. In my books, the WNO can’t be beat for their productions that draw the fun out of operatic tradition.

Verity Babbs is the host of Voice FM's 'Arts & Culture Show' on Wednesdays at 2PM
www.veritybabbs.com
Instagram

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/entertainment-reviews/post/death-in-venice-by-the-wno-review/

There are many perfect partnerships that come to mind - strawberries and cream, gin and tonic, fish and chips - but if I said opera and circus acts you might be skeptical.

However, the collaboration of the WNO with NoFit State, the UK's leading large-scale contemporary circus company, is a match made in Heaven and together they have created a masterpiece.

In a nutshell it is like watching a moving work of art accompanied by a sinister soundtrack.

‘Most of Britten’s operas were commissioned but ‘Death in Venice’ was the last of Benjamin Britten’s operas and a personal project. At the time he was suffering from a heart condition which would claim his life in 1976, three years after the opera had its premiere.

The opera is based on Thomas Mann’s novella of the same name published in 1912. The central character of the opera is Gustav von Aschenbach, a famous German novelist.

He lives alone since his wife died and his only daughter married and he is struggling with his loss of imagination.

In keeping with the title of the opera, the theme of death is apparent throughout. Whilst out walking Aschenbach arrives at the cemetery where a mysterious traveller appears out of the darkness and says, “Go travel to the South. Great poets before you have listened to its voice.” The writer decides to head for the warmer climes of Venice.

Aschenbach plans to stay at the Grand Hȏtel des Bains on the Lido. Whilst en route by boat his vision of visiting an exotic land is muddied by the lewd language of the lecherous youths on board and their leader, an elderly Fop, who is wearing a wig and makeup.

Aschenbach makes the last stretch of his journey by gondola and refers to these boats as, “Black coffin, black.” When he arrives at the hotel there are many nationalities staying there and this is where he first sets eyes on Tadzio - a Polish youth staying with his family and is immediately besotted, “Surely the soul of Greece lies in that bright perfection.” He likens Tadzio to Eros, the Greek God of love.

Instead of Tadzio being played by a ballet dancer, this role is played by Antony César, a brilliant circus performer from NoFit State whose talent was mesmerising, particularly when using aerial straps.

As Aschenbach is forced to keep his distance due to the governess calling Tadzio away from the lingering looks of the writer, the idea to have aerial performers rising high above the stage also conveys the distance between the writer, who has finally discovered passion, and the object of his desire.

The other members of his family included his mother, played by Diana Salles, Vilhelmiina Sinervo and Selma Hellman as his sisters and Riccardo Saggesse performed the role of the Governess and Tadzio’s friend, Jaschiu.

All these circus artists performed with pure grace and incredible strength and ability. When one of the sisters walks on a tightrope, I couldn’t help but think this could be symbolic of Aschenbach walking his own tightrope. Furthemore, when one of the female circus artists performs an incredible routine using aerial silks, perhaps this was to suggest the incoming scirocco, due to the material gently swaying.

Indian cholera has also swept into the Mediterranean. A barber at the hotel is the first person to tell the truth about this disease, whereas other citizens in Venice have told him the scent of germicide is purely a preventative measure as excessively warm weather can be bad for people’s health.

Continuing this theme of honesty versus dishonesty, Aschenbach decides not to tell the Polish family about the cholera outbreak as that would mean they would leave Venice and he wouldn’t see Tadzio again.

During a dream Apollo, the God of art, healing, order and truth, plus the protection of the young, to name a few of his gifts, and Dionysus are fighting over Aschenbach. Dionysus, God of chaos and passion is triumphant and when the writer wakes he succumbs to his fate.

Throughout, the loom of death is also hinted at by the backdrop filled with black and white images including bookcases in Aschenbach’s study, a chandelier in the hotel and the moving waves of the sea. I wondered whether the waves projected onto the screen also referred to cholera being a waterborne disease.

The stage was covered in glossy black boards which meant the images on the backdrop were also reflected onto the floor.

The sets were stripped back - a simple prop was used to depict the scene, for example a large plant stand with a fern demonstrated the action was taking place in the hotel.

The role of Aschenbach was portrayed by the tenor Mark Le Brocq who not only has a beautiful singing voice but is a wonderful actor. He is on stage for practically the whole time and his performance can only be described as a tour de force.

I must also mention the hugely talented Roderick Williams who played the traveller, elderly Fop, hotel manager, hotel barber, Leader of the Players and the Voice of Dionysus. His vocal range was extraordinary and he is without doubt an exceptional performer.

Trying to cut through the chaos is Apollo, played by the sublime countertenor, Timothy Chance who also shines like a beacon on the stage dressed head to foot in shimmering gold.

An opera is not complete without the orchestra who were superb under the baton of Leo Hussain.

I won’t ruin the end of the piece but I was left wondering what actually happens to Tadzio. However, the effect of the sea encompassing the whole of the stage was absolutely stunning. Throughout the performance you could hear a pin drop, but sadly a mobile phone rang at this poignant moment.
