The culmination of a year and a half working on their artworks, collaborating with their sister group ZING, and engaging with the local council by putting on events and workshops, ‘Roadmap’ was a two-day celebration of community spirit.

In Niche Gallery, the Hidden Wardrobe, the Alfred Arcade, and the Alfred Arms (as well as in dozens of nooks and crannies along the Old Northam Road) ZEST artists filled the street with photographs, paintings, textiles, sculptures, drawings, video installations, and soundscapes, with live poetry readings and DJ performances on the opening Friday night. Speeches from ZEST co-directors Gillett and Net Warner, watched adoringly by a 50-strong crowd of artists and art lovers, demonstrated quite how much this collective means to its community. Beyond the artists simply being pleased with their own individual artistic contributions to the show, ZEST seemed palpably proud of themselves as a unit – they walked around with knowing grins that they had done it, and that what they had made was important.

In a typical group show review, I’d list a selection of highlights, but that’s not the point of ‘Roadmap’. Authorship of artworks felt more ambiguous; not necessarily that every artwork felt as if it had been made by the group collectively, but more that it didn’t really matter who had made it. It was all just ‘Roadmap’, and for two days it was all theirs.

Alex Sutherland’s map, created for the exhibition to guide visitors through the various exhibition spaces but also used for the poster, may be what has stuck with me most, however. The design was reminiscent of the coarse rugs found in children’s bedrooms and reception classrooms, showing the layout of an idyllic city, complete with public libraries, supermarkets, fire stations, schools, and parks, all navigable by toy cars pulled clumsily along wide grey woollen roads. This collection of buildings on the Old Northam Road - a blooming "artists' quarter" - belongs on a map like that, in a world like that.

ZEST exhibitions leave me with that optimistic feeling that people are working towards a world where we celebrate each other, where we prioritise creativity, do it ourselves in spite of structural barriers, and honour community.

'Roadmap' may have been ZEST's largest project to date, but it in no way felt like its apogee. Southampton's future as a home for pioneering creatives is safe in this collective's hands. And if every city in the UK were lucky enough to have their own group of brave, resourceful, innovative artists, adamant to make their spaces be beautiful and their art be seen (and – The second project will "unlock the potential" of existing international undersea communications cables to become a vast sensor network, this will start in the North Atlantic.

The third project will use the developing technologies of artificial intelligence (AI) and other similar models to "push the limits" of observing existing oceans and to transform their ability to detect the earliest warning signs of a Subpolar Gyre collapse, which would include identifying gaps and any uncertain data.

The NOC is backing an additional five Subpolar Gyre focused projects, led by more organisations and bodies, with over £4 million provided in funding.

NOC Chief Scientist Professor Penny Holliday said, "This transformative funding from ARIA comes at a critical moment for ocean and climate science, helping to fulfil an urgent need to address gaps in our understanding of Subpolar North Atlantic tipping points.

“NOC will be at the forefront of this ambitious programme developing pioneering innovative approaches—from AI-driven modelling to revolutionary ocean observation technologies—to bridge those knowledge gaps.

“By harnessing our world-leading science and pioneering technology, we will lead and collaborate on multiple projects to enhance our ability to detect early warning signs and better understand the future of our changing ocean."

The projects which are led by the NOC are subject to final contract negotiations. These projects include; Full Ocean Fibre, Aerial Experimental Remote which can sense Ocean Salinity, heaT, Advection and Thermohaline Shifts (AEROSTATS) and Subpolar gyre Observations, models and Artificial Intelligence to Resolve Tipping points and provide Early Warning Detection (SORTED).

Full Ocean Fibre will partner alongside National Physical Laboratory to target "the use of undersea cables used for telecommunications and forming the backbone of the internet to seafloor sensors across thousands of kilometres."

“Full Ocean Fibre will develop the acoustic and fingerprinting techniques needed to identify ocean processes and provide an unprecedented view of the deep North Atlantic from existing cables,” said Dr Carl Spingys who is leading the project. “This project sets the scene for a next-generation ocean and climate observing network enabled by the global network of subsea cables.”

AEROSTATS is an "ambitious airborne earth observation project" with focus on observing "fine-scale interactions between air, ocean and ice in the Greenland sea ice margins." The project will include investigating the usage of airborne platforms such as "airships or high-altitude pseudo-satellites to create cost-effective, long-term monitoring capabilities, with partners NOVELTIS, Radarmetrics and Pixalytics."

“This is a truly bold airborne earth observation project,” said project lead Professor Christine Gommenginger. “Our vision is cost-effective, long-term monitoring capabilities that support early warning of a potential Subpolar Gyre shutdown. With partners across diverse sectors, we’re a cross-disciplinary group bridging technology, climate science and a commitment to tackling climate challenges through innovation.”

SORTED's aim is to "transform the ability to detect and monitor the early warning signs of Subpolar Gyre collapse by pushing the spatiotemporal capabilities of existing observational records" What has been termed as "a novel combination of AI" along with tipping point knowledge from models will assist in SORTED's main objectives. Critical gaps will also be indentified and uncertainties in ocean datasets and make recommendations on the observations "still needed to build robust early warning systems for a potential Subpolar Gyre collapse, with partners University of Southampton and University of Bordeaux."

“Circulation in the Atlantic Subpolar Gyre is thought to be moving towards a collapse but, climate models and ocean observations are too limited to accurately forecast these tipping points,” said Dr Alejandra Sanchez-Franks. “We will be using a novel combination of AI and tipping point knowledge from models to push the spatiotemporal limitations of existing observational records and to underpin the robust early warning systems needed for a potential Subpolar Gyre collapse.”

The scientists work at the NOC will be heavily involved in five additional projects, which also focus on the Atlantic Subpolar Gyre. These are; POLEMIX, which is led by the University of Southampton, TIMBER, led by the University of East Anglia, PROMOTE, led by the University of Reading, VERIFY, led by the University of Leeds and GRAIL, led by British Antarctic Survey.

These projects cover "a wide range of innovation and collaboration, from a new proof-of-concept observing system using autonomous profiling floats to predicting tipping points in marine ecosystems and their consequences and opportunities for the UK, especially for the fishing industry.

They will also involve improving earth system models, creating digital twins to test early warning systems and using robotics to gather data in Antarctic regions."

The government has launched a public consultation as it seeks to gather feedback on proposals to set up a Mayoral Strategic Authority for Hampshire and the Solent region. Highlighting local Community Legends - the often-unsung heroes who make a difference to city life, it is a truly community-driven celebration of Southampton.

Amongst the legends is Voice FM's very own Don John, who has been with the station since the beginning, presenting Soul Train and Night Moves every Tuesday night at 7pm (repeated Sunday at 1pm)

His recognition comes due to the fact Don has been working in the field of Race & Diversity for over 40 years.

Having spent 10 years in HM Treasury in Whitehall he then moved to Southampton to work as a Youth and Education officer for the Southampton Council for Race Equality; working with Black and Asian youth with specific reference to the criminal justice system and racism in the education services.

He then advanced to the position of the Director of the SCRE and oversaw the foundation of race policies that underpinned the city’s policies on race discrimination and racial harassment.

He later secured a position as the lead Race & Diversity officer for Southampton City Council and was involved in developing the city’s diversity policies. The Wind in The Willows was Mayflower Studio’s fourth Christmas Youth Production providing high-quality opportunities for local young talent and featured over 50 young people in the show.

Michael Ockwell, Chief Executive said, “I am delighted that we have achieved record breaking attendances across our venues once again this festive period across our bumper offering including dance, musicals, a children’s Christmas show, our Christmas Youth Project and, of course, the biggest pantomime on the South Coast! In 2023, UK Theatre’s Theatre for Every Child campaign was introduced to amplify national voice about the importance of theatre visits for schools and the new bursary scheme is just one way in which Mayflower supports this national campaign.

Mayflower recognises that many schools’ finances act as a blocker to children attending live theatre and already have schemes in place to help those most disadvantaged schools including subsidised ticket schemes for schools above the national average Free School Meals percentage, free schools theatre concerts with Welsh National Opera and a partnership with Theatre Works offering free tickets to most disadvantaged schools.

Outside of ticketing initiatives, the other major pressure on schools is the cost of transportation to theatre which is a national issue. Whilst schools may be able to afford the discounted ticket prices, they cannot afford the transportation costs to get to the venue.

Many of the costs of theatre trips are also cascaded through to parents and result in many disadvantaged children not able to partake, which results in schools deciding not to commit.

A recent report from the Sutton Trust states that since last year “reports of cuts to trips and outings have more than doubled, now standing at 50%, up from 21% – a proportion that is even higher in schools with the most disadvantaged intakes, at 68%, compared to 44% in the least deprived schools”

The Transport Bursary Scheme has been created to alleviate some of the financial pressures that schools and community groups face to enable more people to attend theatre and experience live arts. The bursary will be a 100% subsidy of the transport cost. The bursary will be awarded on an application basis to schools that meet the following criteria:

⦁ Are a state-funded primary, secondary school, or further education college.
⦁ Are above the national average Free School Meal Percentage of a given year or are located in a designated Levelling Up for Culture area.
⦁ Demonstrate how the theatre trip will benefit their school.
⦁ Are applying for a show that is not already discounted lower than the school rate.
⦁ A school can only be funded once per academic year.
⦁ Are new to Mayflower or have not attended recently

Schools that are interested in applying should email engage@mayflower.org.uk

Mayflower also recognises that many community groups face similar blockers and barriers to accessing live theatre and will also be offering the Transport Bursary to community groups that they already engage with through their participation department.

During a successful pilot of the bursary, Mayflower had 470 engagements of young people across nine different schools and the feedback has been positive with comments including:

It was lovely to see children, who are often disengaged at school, be so excited about the whole experience. Their laughter, the smiles on their faces and the questions throughout showed their engagement in the production.

The trip had an amazing impact on a child with additional needs who had never been to the theatre before. She was so excited and in awe through the whole show. Despite her having speech and language difficulties, she was able to talk animatedly about her favourite part of the show the next day which was a great achievement for her.

One of our children who is a young carer, is very shy and they thoroughly enjoyed the show. We have had emails from parents to say thank you and that they could see a big difference in their child's personality when they got home and told their grown-ups about the show!

We are so grateful to have had this opportunity today, thank you all so much. We have brought 76 children today and 75 of them have never been inside a theatre. All of our school trips we had booked this year have been cancelled due to the cost of coach travel.

The transport bursary has enabled us to bring these children today but just imagine if we could bring the whole school!

Michael Ockwell, Chief Executive at Mayflower, said “Our mission for Mayflower is to offer inspiring experiences to all, and we are delighted that we will now be able to offer our Transport Bursary Scheme in partnership with Xelabus which will help contribute to removing the barrier of transportation costs to schools and community groups. Our role, as a charity, is to ensure that as many people in our community as possible are able to experience live theatre and the arts within their local area.”

Partick O’Sullivan, Head of Participation at Mayflower, said “For many schools and community groups, the cost of coach hire prevents them from accessing live theatre. We are delighted to work with Xelabus to remove this barrier, so more children, young people and community groups can access our rich programme across both our venues.”

Phil Blair, Commercial Manager of Xela Group, said “We at Xelabus recognise the importance of educating children and community groups with the opportunity to visit theatres and we are delighted to be working with Mayflower to achieve this especially during our 15th year of operation.

Mayflower’s themed bus will be seen throughout the area and hopefully attract more theatregoers promoting the diverse range of shows on offer.”
The Transport Bursary Scheme will be in partnership with Xelabus, which is one of the longest running independent passenger transport providers within Hampshire, with over 15 years’ experience.

Michael Harrison is delighted to announce that Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat favourite Jason Donovan will return to Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre this spring.

For one week only, he will reprise his celebrated role as Pharaoh. It has numerous historical sites like listed buildings and ancient monuments which add to its charm. The city's cultural scene is also noted, with theaters, art galleries, and music venues contributing to a vibrant cultural life.

Living and Working: Southampton scores well in terms of job opportunities, health services, and educational facilities. It has been recognized as one of the top cities in the UK for living and working due to its diverse economic base, including sectors like healthcare, education, and port-related industries. However, opinions on the quality of life can differ, with some appreciating the city's amenities while others might find it lacking compared to other cities in terms of cultural vibrancy or aesthetic appeal.

Steamship Shieldhall departing Southampton Docks

Student Life: Being a university city with institutions like the University of Southampton and Solent University, it has a significant student population, which influences local culture, housing, and nightlife. This can be a double-edged sword; while it brings youth and energy, some might find the city center too busy or student-centric.

Criticism: There are criticisms, particularly regarding the city's architecture, which some see as lacking character due to war damage and subsequent rebuilding. And the results, one of the most comprehensive lists of grassland indicator fungi seen by the NatureMetrics experts, showcase the important natural heritage of the site and the rarity, vulnerability and value of the chalk grassland environment.

With fungi playing an important part of soil diversity, helping with soil formation and fertility as well as ecosystem regulation, the find is even more significant.

Ben Ward, CEO of Wonderseekers, said: “We’re so thrilled that the children from our Young Design Panel were an instrumental part of this fungi discovery. Our Charity is on a mission to put children at the heart of big conversations around nature and the future of our planet, so to see them making such a huge difference is amazing.”

Dr Katie Cruickshanks, from NatureMetrics, said: "This project showcases the remarkable power of eDNA, the exceptional value of Winchester's chalk grasslands and underscoring the importance of preserving these ecosystems. Working with Wonderseekers and the children of the Young Design Panel has been truly inspiring; their enthusiasm and curiosity exemplify how science can engage and empower the next generation."

Nathalie Hinds, Director of the Institute’s Innovation and Partnerships said: “We value hands on experiences that engage young minds in understanding and preserving our natural environment. We are thrilled about the discovery of a rich biodiversity of fungi and are very much looking forward to working with Wonderseekers and the Young Design Panel more in the future.

Wonderseekers, the charity behind Winchester Science Centre has been focused on engaging young people in science since 1986. A staggering 70% of children surveyed by Save the Children are worried about the world they will inherit. Through projects and partnerships like those with the Institute for Sustainability and NatureMetrics, Wonderseekers uses science to engage children with the world in a fun and imaginative way, helping them understand and respond to these global issues. The Charity wants children to discover the wonder of science from an early age and use it to make sense of the world around them. By doing this, they’ll be equipped and empowered to make a positive change for their future and the future of the planet.

Discover more at Wonderseekers

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/news/post/voice-fm-volunteers-movember-for-fellow-presenter/

Following the worrying news that fellow Voice FM presenter Daniel Langlish-Beard (right) had been diagnosed with cancer, and that it was spreading, Voice FM station manager Xan Phillips and D-Word presenter Peter Langton, decided to join 2024’s Movember.

“Danny is been a massive part of Voice FM,” said Xan. “His show Spectrum is always a great listen and give Southampton’s LGBQT+ community a water cooler to gather around. We’ll be posting one simple question per day on our social media; let us know your thoughts! There will be quizzes (mystery sounds) food tastings (veggie fry up anyone?), and also a national Birdsong Challenge: download the Merlin app and tell us about the birds you can hear near you and we’ll let everyone else know.

Let’s connect to celebrate our beautiful and precious home, to inspire each other, and take action, no matter how small. It will all make a difference!

You can find more information on our social media, and also check out Our.Earth.Week on Instagram too.

The Community Radio Environment Network

https://www.voicefmradio.co.uk/community/blogs/news/post/darren-day-to-star-as-billy-flynn-in-chicago-at-mayflower-theatre/

David Ian for Crossroads Live in association with Barry and Fran Weissler are delighted to announce that West End and TV star Darren Day will join the UK and Ireland tour of CHICAGO as Billy Flynn for one week only, playing the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton (19 – 23 November 2024).

Darren said today, “I’m looking forward to returning to Chicago as Billy Flynn - it’s a role that’s had my heart for many years, so I was thrilled to be asked to step into his shoes once again.
