Man dies after getting trapped in recycling machine

A 23-year-old man has died after becoming trapped in a machine at a recycling plant.

The employee is understood to have become stuck inside the industrial machine, which crushes recycling into bales to be sent out, at about 4pm on Thursday.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police and emergency services were called to H&A Hygiene Services on Cardrew Way, Redruth, at around 4pm on Thursday 16 November, with reports of a man trapped in the machinery.

“A 23-year-old local man was declared deceased at the scene. Formal identification is yet to have taken place, but next of kin have been informed.

“Enquiries are under way to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed of this matter.

“Police remain at the scene as part of their enquiries.”

Another employee at the Redruth plant told Cornwall Live: “My mate told me he went to the toilet and when he came back the 23-year-old was missing. The baler had stopped working.”

The Health and Safety Executive has confirmed it is assisting the investigation.
