Meghan Markle has revealed she gave an immediate “yes” to Prince Harry after he got down on one knee to propose as they cooked dinner at Kensington Palace.
The actress, 36, said they were trying to roast a chicken when he surprised her by popping the question at his home, Nottingham Cottage.
In their first interview after their engagement was announced, she said: “(It was) just an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee.
“As a matter of fact I could barely let you finish proposing, I said – ‘can I say yes now’?”
Prince Harry replied: “She didn’t even let me finish, she said ‘can I say yes, can I say yes?’ and then there were hugs and I had the ring… and I was like ‘can I – can I give you the ring?'”
The couple got engaged after a relationship of around 16 months, much of it in the glare of publicity, after they were introduced by a mutual female friend in July 2016.
They revealed the went on just two dates in London, before Harry, 33, asked the actress to join him in Botswana.
“I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana,” said Prince Harry.
“And we camped out with each other under the stars… she came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic.”
It was there that they got the chance to get to know each other – both admitting they did not know much before they met – and resolved to commit to a long distance relationship.
The Suits actress also revealed she has met the Queen a couple of times and described her as an “incredible woman”.
She added that Harry’s brother, Prince William, and the Duchess of Cambridge have “been amazing” during their relationship.
But the couple admitted they were “totally unprepared” for the reaction when news of their relationship came out.
In November last year, Prince Harry issued a statement warning the press against harassing Meghan Markle.
Prince Harry confirmed that the engagement ring he gave to his fiancee contains diamonds from Princess Diana’s jewellery collection.
He said: “The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s (what’s) her favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewellery collection to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.
“I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me, but then, as I said, would have probably been best friends with Meghan.
“It is days like today when I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news.”
The couple are set to be married in the spring, a statement from Clarence House said, but the venue has yet to be confirmed.
