2020 has found Slackrr with some time to work on a new record after a never-ending touring cycle that has earned them a fanatic fan-base and cult like status on the road and boy have they used that time wisely.
The 2nd single from the new album is called the Current and marks a distinct change of direction musically for the band.
If Reflections, the first single off the second album, was an experiment, the band clearly liked what they created, as the current is more of the same, but polished, refined, bigger, bolder and certainly better.
With a catchy as hell chorus and a summery guitar line you could swear you’ve heard a million times, not because it’s unoriginal but simply because it’s that good! And with drummers receiving renewed levels of respect within pop punk at present, it is worth pointing out here that the drums have been refined from the aggression of last album ‘Time, it waits for no one’ into a brilliant technical drumming style that really elevates The Current.
This single takes Slackrr to sacred ground, reminiscent of early Neck Deep and Wstr, and yet more radio friendly than both, there’s an element of ‘Take This To Your Grave’ era Fall Out Boy about the start of this song too.
The current opens up a new world to Slackrr, but with local radio behind them it’s only a matter of time before this track is dominating the airwaves with excellent melody and a soaring chorus!
For all the highs, at times it does feel that vocally this is a band transitioning to a new style, a couple of creeks in pitch, however one would expect this to iron itself out as Slackrr become more used to this modern pop punk style.
In conclusion, the current is a very strong effort, it will rock venues all over the country and I would expect it to become a firm fan favourite as Slackrr start taking over bigger venues.
