The Walt Disney Company UK and Ireland and Mayflower Theatre have today announced that a free pop-up exhibition about Disney’s The Lion King will open in Southampton at Westquay shopping centre this half term. The exhibition arrives ahead of The Lion King UK & Ireland tour opening at Mayflower Theatre this September from Thursday 3 September until Saturday 10 October 2020. Tickets to the show are now on sale.

Visitors will be able to explore the iconic masks, puppets and costumes from the Tony Award®-winning The Lion King up-close and learn about the inspiration behind many of the show’s impressive designs. Puppets such as Rafiki and Zazu will be on display, alongside the iconic Mufasa, Simba and Nala masks and other much-loved pieces from the musical.

There will also be the opportunity to take part in a number of bite-sized musical theatre sessions where participants will explore the much-loved numbers from the production – available on selected days.

The exhibition opens at Westquay shopping centre in Southampton on Monday 17 until Friday 21 February. The exhibition is free and there is no booking required.

Since the UK premiere on Tuesday 19 October 1999, The Lion King has entertained more than 16 million theatregoers and remains one of the longest-running West End musicals of all time.

Casting for the Southampton season was announced last summer drawing from countries including Brazil, Democratic Republic of the Congo, France, Ireland, Jamaica, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, and United Kingdom.

The roles of Simba, Nala and Rafiki will be played by Nick Afoa, Josslynn Hlenti and Thandazile Soni respectively. The company will also include Steve Beirnaet, Matthew Forbes, Jean-Luc Guizonne, Richard Hurst, Alan McHale, Rebecca Omogbehin, Carl Sanderson and Simon Trinder.
