Theatre Review - Club Tropicana - Mayflower

As an 80's child anything that involves the music and fashion of my childhood is always going to spark my interest so I was really looking forward to seeing this show.

Set in the fictional 'Club Tropicana' hotel in Spain during the decade of the neon, this show is the latest of the Jukebox musicals featuring loads of your favourite 80's hits including 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', 'Oops Upside Your Head', 'Only You' , 'Jump' and many many more. I don't think I've seen a show fit quite so many in!!

From the second we meet Garry the entertainments manager of the aforementioned hotel I actually felt like I was on holiday, watching the entertainment in my all inclusive hotel with a cocktail in hand. The atmosphere in the theatre added to that, everyone was there to have a good time.

Starring X Factor's Joe McElderry as Garry this is such a feel good show. I've seen Joe in a few things but this is by far the best role I've seen him do. He was so fun. His portrayal of Garry reminded me so much of the Redcoats I loved so much on holidays as a child. He was hilarious, camp and wonderful. His voice is incredible. He was having so much fun on that stage and it was infectious!

The story in this is a bit predictable, boy and girl split up, go off on holiday separately and 'oh look they're in the same hotel' so you could tell what was going to happen but that didn't make it any less enjoyable. It reminded me a little bit of Sandy and Danny in Grease when they find out they're at the same school.

This show was so fun to watch, the set was so good and so colourful and the joy the cast appeared to have performing in this really rubs off. It was such a fun entertaining evening. Nothing serious, no heavy story or big message to take away just a fun, nostalgic, hi-energy show encompassing everything you imagine and remember (if you're old enough) from the 80s.

Although Joe was incredible in this the star of this show is the cleaner/dogsbody of the hotel, Consuela played by Kate Robbins who I am a big fan of. She is absolutely hilarious in this role. Her one liners are brilliant and she shows off some of her famous impressions which was one of the funniest moments of this show. I loved her and so did everyone else. She was cast perfectly in this show I just wish she was in it a bit more.

If you're looking for a good night out, where you're encouraged to have a dance and enjoy yourself this is the show for you.

It's feel-good, family friendly and fun!

Club Tropicana is at Mayflower until 27th July, tickets available at
