#theatrereview - Educating Rita - MAST Mayflower Studio

Southampton’s brand-new theatre, MAST mayflower studios started welcoming audiences this year and this week Educating Rita started it’s run – and wow, what a play!

Stephen Tompkinson and Jessica Johnson star in Willy Russell's Educating Rita - a play that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next!

Educating Rita tells the story of a married hairdresser called Rita, played fantastically and charismatically by Jessica Johnson, who begins a course at open University.

The play sees Rita's encounters with university lecturer Frank, played by Stephen Tompkinson, a poet, academic and drinker!

Rita surprises him - her character and enthusiasm leave him looking forward to their weekly meetings. Jessica Johnson portrays the character of Rita fantastically - the way she moves around the stage, her hand gestures and witty remarks keep the audience laughing. Frank is drawn in by Rita.

The stage, a typical academic's office, is used brilliantly throughout the play by the characters - whether that be using the different seating areas carefully placed around the stage or the many props scattered around. Rita's costume changes were very quick and there were some fabulous, bright jumpers and dungarees!

Educating Rita follows the relationship between Frank and Rita and they both rather quickly realise how much they learn from each other.
