Sim Williams headlining at Drift (Portsmouth)

Sim Williams headlining the Drift bar, Portsmouth Friday 5th February supported by Daniel Eagle and Winters Hill.

My first visit to the Drift bar, on the top floor we saw the night’s performances in a quaint room lit up by the bar and stage. Wooden bench seating along the left hand wall gives the bar the seaside feel to it.

Our very own Daniel Eagle opened up the gig and what a way to start the night! Dan performed some favourite covers which had the crowd on singing along and good-humoured originals including ‘Netflix and Kill’, which I personally recommend you look up! You’ll be singing it for days.

After his performance he was lovely to talk to, already grabbed my ticket for Dan’s Southampton performance at the Frog and Frigate on his tour this year.

Following Daniel Eagle were Winters Hill, A three piece band from the South of England. The band consists of Max Hoar on guitar and vocals, Nimrod Taabu on cajon drum and Jack Holmar on harmonica, guitar and vocals. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Winters Hill, the first I had heard of the group were their performance at Never Fades Records sessions. Looking at the stage seeing a banjo, electric guitar, harmonica, cajon, an interesting mixture that worked astonishingly well. They certainly gained a new fan here. ‘Shake It Off’ really stood to me, had a Mumford and Sons with twist feel to it and the entire crowd loved their unpredicted cover of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ had the whole room on their feet laughing and singing along. Very easy guys to talk to and all in all a great performance. Check out their next gig in London, at  Paradise, Kensal Green on Sunday 21st February.

Our headliner for the night Sim Williams played a fantastic set with some incredible originals. The hard work that Sim had put in for the night’s performance was clear. The first time I had heard Sim sing was at Voice FM on our In Session show and I couldn’t wait to see him live. After his performance at the Drift I still feel the same and look forward to the next gig and hope to get to know more about Sim’s background in music.

Check out the dates for their upcoming gigs, on their Facebook and Twitter pages.
