Southampton Appoints New Lord Mayor in Traditional Ceremony

Southampton gears up to welcome Councillor David Shields as its new Lord Mayor in a prestigious ceremony on Wednesday, May 15th at 11 am. The event marks the start of Councillor Shields' year-long term and will be attended by dignitaries, past Mayors, and the public.

This time-honored tradition celebrates the city's leadership transition. Councillor Shields, who previously served as Deputy Lord Mayor (Sheriff), will take the oath of office and receive the ceremonial robes and chain. He will also announce his chosen charities for the year.

The outgoing Lord Mayor, Councillor Valerie Laurent, will be present to hand over the reins. As Lord Mayor, Councillor Shields will become the city's "first citizen" and represent Southampton on local, regional, and national stages.

The Mayor Making ceremony is a free public event. Doors open at 10.30 am, so come celebrate Southampton's new leader!
