Review: Ghost Stories at Mayflower Theatre

“Prepare for a jump scare” Dean Huelin

Ghost Stories follows professor Philip Goodman (Dan Tetsell) as he lectures around all things paranormal which includes the audience in the interactions with him for the 90 minute show.

He tells of 3 separate haunting stories which form the backbone of the play with the stories all somehow intertwining at the finale.

Throughout you are drawn into the stories in a calm way, to then be hit with many jump scares, not only visually but through the haunting audio.

Many times the theatre is plunged into darkness with only a mere torch or flickering lights to be seen on stage creating the effect that anything could appear anywhere at any moment.

Ghost Stories is a real life horror film, that relies on the odd squeaking door, a flickery light or a creepy doll to instil the fear into the audience prior to any jump scares.

Some light hearted moments where you could laugh although mainly people laughing at themselves for screaming or jumping throughout the play. Not for the faint hearted.

Overall an enjoyable horror evening out at Mayflower Theatre but not something I would necessarily need to watch again.

Definitely could be scarier, I was expecting maybe more things to come closer to the audience as we were interacted with at the start and the play relied heavily on overly loud sudden music along with the jump scares.

I was sat in the stalls & a couple of spooky goings on were low level on the stage so either missed or obstructed by peoples heads.

Try to sit somewhere that is more tiered for a better view of the whole stage.
