Green Party and Reform Tip Balance of Power In Southampton

2026 Elections counting in the O2 Guildhall

Labour loose overall control

In a dramatic night of elections results in Southampton Labour lost overall control of the City Council due to a surge in support for the Reform and the Green Party

Reform gained 6 seats putting them on 7 and the Green Party won 4 giving them 6 seats.

Council leader Alex Winning (Labour) was defeated in Shirley by former Labour councillor Rebecca McCreanor who is now a Liberal Democrat.

Speaking to Voice FM’s Declan Murphy, Labour MP Darren Paffey (Southampton Itchen) said:

“ We are, are still the public servants here. We are elected to make the policies and changes in this city that people have asked for when they have elected us. They've given us another part of that message tonight that they want to see more change or different change. So rest assured that we will absolutely be hearing what people are saying through the ballot box and Labour is still absolutely on the side of decent, hardworking people who just want to get on in life, and that is where our focus will remain.”

Nationally for Remain it was a very successful election and for  Remain's Philip Crook who gained Croxford told Declan: “ Southampton has great opportunity, but it's got to be realised, and it can only be realised by Reform, a Reform council, and hopefully in a few years' time we take control, that we open up the opportunities for the people of Southampton who have been held back for far too long.”

The surprise winners from the evening were the Green Party who gained 4 seats bringing their total to six. Nationally the party gained 25 seats so this was a significant result on the south coast.

Luke Reynolds, who won in Bargate, told Voice FM: “ Southampton's backing Green because we're a community-based party. We're talking to residents, listening to what they have to say, and responding to that. Most of our members and our councillors are really embedded in the city and we're speaking for residents.“

The new political balance of Southampton City Council:

Reform 8 (+7)

Liberal Democrats 7 (0)

Turnout 36.6%  +8.8% higher than 2 years prior
