Dr Tim Beanland, of Winchester has constructed a puzzle book to support people reduce signs of dementia. His book “Mind Games” stores 150 plus enjoyable puzzles was published by Penguin on the 12th October.

Tim has worked at the leading dementia charity Alzheimer’s Society since 2010 and is now Head of Knowledge and Learning at the institution.

He explained how is book is partly a fundraiser, with a percentage of the funds going to charity. This will support Alzheimer’s Society carry on supporting those with dementia and fund research.

However there’s more to it:

“Mind Games is also a fun way to give the brain a workout. I’ve included puzzles that exercises different parts of the brain which get harder as you work through the book”, Tim declares.

As explained by his words next to the puzzles, the concept is that by often exercising the grey matter like this you can help decrease your likelihood of developing dementia, for instance Alzheimer’s disease.

Preventing dementia is vital due to our ageing population and with no cure achieved yet, this debilitating illness has now become the UK’s highest killer.

Dr Beanland states that, as well as doing puzzles there are a number of others way to stimulate your brain and help reduce dementia, for example as learning a new instrument, language or even picking up a new hobby. He further comments:”We can also promote good brain health by looking after our physical health through regular exercise, a balanced diet and so on.”

The proof is that up to 40% of dementia is preventable by lifestyle switches.
