Southampton residents have historic opportunity

Southampton residents invited to have their say through historic Court Leet

Southampton City Council is inviting residents, community groups and organisations to take part in one of the city’s oldest civic traditions, as plans are confirmed for this year’s Court Leet.

The annual Court Leet ceremony takes place on Tuesday 29 September and gives people in Southampton the opportunity to raise matters of local concern directly through a formal process known as a Presentment. Presentments accepted by the Court Leet panel are then referred to the relevant Cabinet Member and reported to a future meeting of the council’s Cabinet.

Court Leet is one of Southampton’s most distinctive civic traditions and reflects the city’s long history of local democracy. Although the court no longer has legal powers, it continues to provide a valuable route for residents to bring forward issues that may not otherwise come to the attention of the council.

Anyone wishing to make a Presentment is asked to submit it in writing, along with their name and address. They must be submitted by 5pm on Monday 28 September. Presentments should be clear, concise and focused on matters within the council’s remit.

Councillor Katherine Barbour, The Sheriff of Southampton said: “Court Leet is a unique part of Southampton’s civic life one of our city’s oldest traditions with the earliest surviving records from 1549. It is also reminder that residents have always played an important role in shaping the city. It gives people a formal way to raise local issues, share ideas and help make sure matters that affect communities are heard. I’m also really excited to welcome the children of St Denys Primary School this year so that they can learn about this ancient civic tradition.”
