This was Xan's 'Green Focus' during today's Your Green Voice
It’s leap year day, and thanks to the ancient blessing of St Patrick women were allowed to ask men an unusual question during these extra 24 hours.
Way back when, in the mists of time, It was said to be St. Brigid of Kildare who brought to St Patrick’s attention, that men were taking too long to propose - what was he going to do about it.
And so he decreed that every seven years women could ask men for their hand in marriage. She said that’s way to long and they settle at four years.
Which is fun for radio stations to chat about but according to a recent conversation I had, seems a little old fashioned, times have changed.
So let’s give it a modern spin. If it is a day that questions can be asked, maybe the next man you meet, you can ask them to fix the climate.
They might ask - why should men do this?
Men began the industrial revolution.
they also began the chemical revolution 60 years ago.
They have almost all the top jobs.
The climate is in a mess.
In fact, you might not be aware of this, but around the world in the past two days hundreds, possibly thousands of heat records have been broken, and this is day and night time records (see below).
So the question women should ask men today is, you’ve enjoyed being in charge, now you can enjoy fixing the climate mess that man has created, and marry humanity back to nature
Why don’t we call it St Brigid’s Proposal?
