Flood Alert Tonight - Itchen Estuary

A Flood Warning as follows has been issued by the Environment Agency (See latest update here)

“Flood Warning in force: Itchen estuary - From Woodmill to Woolston

Immediate action required.

Tuesday's early morning tide at 00:30 on 09/04/2024 and 02:00 on 09/04/2024 is higher than normal due to unsettled weather with strong Southerly Force 6 winds.

The weather increases tide table values by 0.82 m.

The total forecast tide is 5.64 metres Chart Datum (2.90 mAOD) at Southampton.

The tide will be similar to 14 February 2014.

For 1 hour either side of high water, the tide will flow across the road, flooding Woodmill Lane and Woodmill Activity Centre.

The river will be out of bank at Riverside Park, making the edge of the river channel impossible to see.

Flood depths in roads and the park will be significant, and water will be fast flowing.

Flood Warnings in place in Southampton for 2 hours either side of tonight’s high tides (00:30 and 02:00), teamed with unsettled weather including Southerly Force 6 winds.

  • Itchen estuary (Coastal areas Southampton Water to Woodmill)
  • Mansbridge and Woodmill on the River Itchen
  • Redbridge - Test Lane (Redbridge)

Localised flooding to coastal areas around the Itchen Estuary is likely.

Areas impacted include:

  • Priory Road (St Denys) – junction to Adelaide Road and gardens of properties facing the river.
  • Northam, St Marys and Chapel – including Chapel Road, Albert Road North and Crosshouse Hard Car Park
  • Boardwalk (St Denys)
  • Test Lane (Redbridge)
  • Weston Parade (Woolston)
  • Hazel Road (Woolston)
  • Woodmill Lane (around Woodmill Bridge)
  • Riverside Park – walking routes from Cobden Bridge to Mansbridge Road.

At St Denys, please install flood protection 1 hour before high tide.

Residents at Priory Road (St Denys) who have property flood resilience measures are advised to install and test. Flooding to gardens of properties fronting the river is likely. It will be advisable to move cars away from the lower end of Priory Rd South and Adelaide Rd near the Junction.

Please avoid flooded areas, especially coastal areas and along riverbanks where you might not be able to see the edges.

After this tide the weather becomes more settled but minor impacts could continue until Thursday (11/04/2024).
Please avoid flooded areas of Riverside Park -  Large areas of Riverside Park will also be affected. It will be difficult to see the edge of the river bank and the park should be avoided.
