A new approach is required to change perceptions.
The recent events at Southampton Football Club mean that the whole city has been painted with the same brush.
The name Southampton = Cheats. It doesn't matter who did what, the outcome is the same and this will form part of the narrative that people have about Southampton.
They won't see the art, the music, the multi-cultural magic within the city, the importance of the port, the birthplace of the Spitfire.
Meanwhile Southampton itself will need to shake off this and other aspects of the past that cling to it like a paradigm it just can't shake.
There is a sense in the city's conscious that bad things seem to happen.
You can trace this back to 1338 with the sacking of Southampton when approximately 600 people were killed prompting the grand, defensive walls to be built around the city and where the remaining iconic Bargate can be found.
Move forward to the Titanic in 1912 when once again around 600 people from Southampton perished as part of the crew.
Then move forward to the second world war where over 600 people were killed during the Blitz with 12% of housing stock destroyed. In the Hodsall Report it said that Southampton was shot mentally, there was a mass exodus every night to Romsey and Winchester.
In 1987 the Pier burnt down and then in 1988 the ice rink closed, which might not seem like much but to locals that's the last bad thing to happen in Southampton. Now you have #Spygate.
But if Southampton is to cleanse its image, a new approach is needed, and rather than just clearing the decks and starting again, do we to witness people atoning for their mistakes, and growing in the process?
The instant reaction is to sack everyone and start again, but maybe those involved should stay and learn from their mistakes. Next season will be horrendous for away fans, the players and management team, they cant just leave and let the fans and new intake take the stick.
The whole city has been attached to #Spygate, and beyond football fans, in an instant it has become "cheat = Southampton", so being different could reset people's minds about the city.
What do you think? What are the positives about the city that you think people should know about?
Remember this is where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail on the Mayflower in 1620, it is one of the greenest cities in the UK, the Spitfire was designed and built here, the Mayflower Theatre is the second biggest in the UK, the port is home of the Merchant Navy, the music scene with venues like The Joiners, helping bands like Oasis and Coldplay launch their careers and the expanding cultural quarter around the Mayflower Studios and the City Art Gallery, it is an epic city.
