Stay safe as extreme heat warning is issued for Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight

People across Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight are being urged to take extra care as exceptionally hot and humid weather continues across the region.

With unseasonably high temperatures already present, a red warning for extreme heat is in place from midnight tonight until Thursday, with very hot and humid conditions continuing into the end of the week. Temperatures are expected to remain high overnight, making it harder for people to recover from the daytime heat.

People are also being asked to check on older neighbours, young children, those with long-term health conditions, anyone living alone, and people working or spending long periods outdoors. With more people likely to head to beaches, rivers and lakes, residents are also reminded to take care on the road network and around water.

This heatwave is also a reminder to stay cool in greener ways. Small environmental choices can help reduce waste, save energy and protect wildlife while keeping people safe.

Top tips to stay cool and keep it green:

  • Use a refillable bottle and drink tap water regularly.

  • Keep homes cool naturally by closing curtains and blinds during the day.

  • Open windows later if it becomes cooler outside.

  • Choose lighter meals to avoid heating up your home with cooking.

  • Use fans carefully instead of relying on air conditioning where possible.

  • Avoid unnecessary car journeys during the hottest part of the day.

  • Water plants early or late to reduce evaporation.

  • Leave shallow water out for birds, bees and other wildlife.

Signs of heat exhaustion include tiredness, dizziness, headache, nausea, heavy sweating, cramps, thirst and weakness. Anyone affected should be moved to a cool place, given fluids, and cooled with water, fans or cold packs. The NHS 111 online or phone service should be used if unsure about presenting symptoms.

Heatstroke is more serious and can be life-threatening. Call 999 if someone becomes: confused, has a seizure, loses consciousness, has extremely hot skin, fast breathing or a fast heartbeat.

Health advice is clear: stay out of the strongest sun where possible, drink plenty of cold fluids, wear sunscreen, and look out for each other.
